Statement of Job

The After-School Programs Associate is responsible for the overall administrative, educational, and artistic management of the Atlanta Music Project’s after-school programs.

AMP’s current after-school programs consist of a long-standing partnership at two City of Atlanta recreation centers: Perkerson Park Recreation Center, which hosts an elementary string orchestra program; and the South Bend Center for Arts & Culture, which hosts a concert band program. Additional after-school programs are planned for the future.

The AMP After-School programs are often a child’s first interaction with AMP as well as their first experience playing an instrument and being part of an ensemble. AMP’s after-school programming is intensive, with music classes taking place four days per week for two hours each day. The intensive program schedule allows after-school students to rapidly develop their musical skills. Students perform concerts throughout the year.

In partnership with the City of Atlanta, AMP After-School students also receive transportation from school, a snack, supervised homework period, and a warm dinner.

The goal of AMP After-School programs is to provide elementary school students with a strong foundation of musical skills, such that they are prepared to successfully join AMP’s more advanced programming, which include the AMP Academy (private lessons), and the AMP Youth Orchestras.

The After-School Programs Associate position requires a unique combination of skills, including experience working with elementary school-aged students, knowledge of music education, and the ability to communicate with multiple constituencies.

The successful candidate will possess an unyielding commitment to empowering youth to realize their possibilities through music. They will also uphold high expectations and performance quality from both teaching artists and students. This position reports to the Chief Program Officer and works closely with the other program leaders. The teaching artists and site assistants of AMP after-school programs report to the After-School Programs Associate.

 

About the Atlanta Music Project

Founded in 2010, the Atlanta Music Project provides world-class music training supporting youth growth and development. Operating in under-resourced communities, AMP’s mission is to empower youth to realize their possibilities through music.

In addition to after-school learning sites providing band, orchestra and choir instruction, AMP’s programs include: the AMP Academy, providing advanced musical training to AMP’s most talented and dedicated students; the AMP Preparatory School for elementary school-aged musicians; the AMP Summer Series, a music festival and school; and the AMP Youth Orchestras and Choirs. AMP also has a college and career program supporting AMP alumni. With a projected 2023-20224 annual operating budget of $2.9MM, AMP will serve over 500 young musicians.

AMP music ensembles perform more than 50 concerts annually, performing in venues all across Atlanta, from community centers to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. AMP music ensembles have performed alongside international stars such as the Harlem Quartet, electric violinist Lindsey Stirling, cellist Sterling Elliott, operatic baritone Ed Parks, rapper Lecrae, R&B singer Monica, and The Imani Winds. AMP musicians can be seen performing with rapper T.I. on NPR’s Tiny Desk concert series.

AMP’s young musicians have successfully auditioned for Georgia All-State ensembles, the Atlanta Opera, and have concertized as far away as Los Angeles, Aspen, Mexico City and Scotland. AMP is a 2019 winner of ArtsATL’s Luminary Award for Arts Education and a 2018 winner of Emory University’s Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Award. In 2016 and 2017, the White House named AMP one of the top 50 youth arts programs in the nation.

AMP’s existence is a direct result of the 2009 TED Prize, which was awarded to Dr. Jose Antonio Abreu, founder of Venezuela’s El Sistema. AMP’s co-founders were members of the Sistema Fellows Program at the New England Conservatory in Boston.

AMP’s current and past funders include Carnegie Hall, PwC, Bank of America, the Chick-fil-A Foundation, the Coca-Cola Foundation, Mailchimp, The Zeist Foundation, the Abraham J. & Phyllis Katz Foundation, the Harland Charitable Foundation, the Arthur M. After-School Programs Associate Responsibilities (100%):

  • Understand and represent the AMP philosophies for uplifting youths, families and communities through the pursuit of musical excellence
  • Work towards developing AMP After-School programs into successful feeders for more advanced AMP programs
  • Execute recruitment process for AMP After-School programs
  • Manage AMP After-School teaching artists and site assistants
  • In collaboration with Chief Program Officer and teaching artists, select repertoire and method books
  • Monitor the artistic progress of AMP After-School ensembles towards all assigned concerts
  • Manage the execution of all AMP After-School concerts
  • Work collaboratively with City of Atlanta staff and partners towards a high-functioning after-school experience for students, parents, and guardians
  • Monitor AMP After-School pay sheets for submission to AMP administration
  • Participate in payroll meetings to ensure accurate record-keeping and compensation payments
  • Manage the AMP After-School class and performance schedule
  • Explain and enforce the AMP After-School attendance policy and track AMP students’ attendance
  • Act as the main liaison between AMP and AMP After-School parents/families
  • Prepare and lead meetings with AMP After-School parents/guardians
  • Manage field trips, including permission forms, transportation, parent chaperones
  • Manage the registration process and maintain student files
  • In collaboration with operations department and Chief Program Officer, manage, purchase and inventory class materials, instruments and concert uniforms
  • Participate in the interviewing and selection of teaching artists and site assistants
  • Manage assigned program portions of the AMP Summer Series
  • When necessary, substitute teach for teaching artists
  • Seek opportunities for AMP After-School programs to collaborate and partner
  • Attend peer exchange and professional development workshops
  • Execute additional administrative tasks as necessary

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Music degree (required)
  • Intrinsic desire to execute and contribute work of outstanding quality
  • 1-year of experience working in non-profit, music education and/or youth development
  • Experience within music education, specifically with elementary school students
  • Strong knowledge of music education principles
  • Strong performing ability as a classical musician
  • Excellent command of Google Docs, Microsoft Office, PowerPoint
  • Dependable, with excellent follow-through on tasks and responsibilities

Additional Work Demands

  • Must be available to work weekday afternoons and evenings, per program schedule
  • Must be available to work some evenings and weekends

 

Notes: The After-School Programs Associate is a full-time position starting at the winning candidate’s earliest availability. Salary range is $40,000 – $55,000, commensurate with experience. Benefits include company health insurance and 401K. Background check required.
