John Sparrow, currently a Director at BoardWalk Consulting, has 23 years of experience in nonprofit administration and performing arts venue management. In addition to his responsibilities with BoardWalk, he also oversees the activities of the Dawson Family Foundation, a private family foundation that provides support and resources to educational institutions, performing arts institutions and talented and ambitious minority students.
He served as the Vice President of Orchestra Initiatives and General Manager for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra from 2000 – 2012, where he was responsible for the day to day planning, management and oversight of organizational operations. From 1990-1999 Sparrow held positions with the Florida Philharmonic in both concert production and artistic administration, and from 1994-99 was directly responsible for organizational and artistic planning and operations. From 1999-2000 he held the position of Director of Programming and Co-Director of External Affairs for the Performing Arts Center of Greater Miami. His professional accomplishments include eight successful labor negotiations, the creation of several successful artistic initiatives involving collaborations between visual and instrumental artists that received critical acclaim, the direct oversight of recording projects, radio, and television programs for regional, national and international broadcast and distribution as well as launching, managing and serving as the Executive Producer of projects for ASO Media, a classical media label with domestic and international distribution.
Additionally, he remains committed to the education and training of arts administrators, and helped to co-author a case study in 2003 with the Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario, which has been taught at 6 different institutions in three countries. He has been a lecturer at the Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario, The Goizueta School of Business at Emory University, Harvard Business School, The University of Texas at Austin and the Schiller College of Management at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He received a Bachelor of Music in bassoon performance from the Eastman School of Music and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Florida. Sparrow has been a board member of the Atlanta Chapter of the Recording Academy, Dad’s Garage Theater Company and the Atlanta Music Project; he has also been a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Greater Miami.
