Tom Bates has more than 20 years experience starting and running new businesses for major media companies and is the founder of Atlanta-based website Kudzu.com. He is currently working on a new social commerce start-up and building a school in Cambodia.
Bates grew Kudzu.com into a website that helps 20 million homeowners a year plan projects and choose highly rated contractors. Kudzu is also the services directory on 100 websites including HGTV.com.
Previously, he ran the daily operation of Cox Interactive Media’s network of 35 city sites – as well as 25 websites for Cox’s cable, broadcast TV and newspaper divisions.
Before Cox, Bates was SVP of Ad Sales for the New Century Network and created one of the internet’s first ad networks, consisting of 130 newspaper websites in the USA’s top 50 markets. The venture was backed by Advance, Cox, Gannett, Hearst, NY Times, Tribune and Washington Post.
He also helped launch USA TODAY’s International Edition, sold daily in 90+ countries. As Managing Director/Europe & Asia, he had P&L responsibility for all operations outside the USA.
